In our experience at Spring Garden Counseling Inc., one of the biggest obstacles in getting someone to seek help is getting them to realize they need it in the first place. While people sometimes resist seeking psychological help out of stubbornness, it is also common for them to simply not realize their experiences are abnormal enough to warrant intervention. For example, many people do not realize they are dealing with clinical anxiety issues because they don’t recognize their own symptoms. Here, we will go over three of the lesser-known symptoms of anxiety to help you determine if you or a loved one is dealing with an anxiety disorder.

Three Lesser-Known Symptoms of Anxiety

  • Stomach Problems – In our experience, many people assume anxiety is just a feeling of nervousness. However, anxiety can be much more than an emotion—it can trigger a range of physical symptoms. One of the symptoms psychologists know to look for, but many laypeople do not, is gastrointestinal issues. If you are feeling sick to your stomach a lot, then it’s possible you have an anxiety disorder.
  • Chest Pain – Another physical symptom of anxiety is a racing heart, which can also be accompanied by chest pain. If you are experiencing these symptoms or any heart-related concerns, you should naturally get checked out physically by a doctor. However, it is also very possible these symptoms are caused by anxiety.
  • Labored Breathing – The third lesser-known symptom of anxiety we want to cover here is shortness of breath or otherwise labored breathing. As with the other physical symptoms we have described, this one can also be caused by physical ailments, so get it checked out, but know that it is often a symptom of anxiety disorders, too.
