Depression is a mental health disorder that affects people in a variety of ways. While most people think of depression as a condition that results in persistent sadness, it can manifest itself through many different symptoms.

There are also a few different types of depression that can arise based on a person’s specific circumstances or stage in life. Here is a closer look at a few of the types of depression:
- Major Depressive Disorder—This is the most widely recognized and common type of depression. This form of depression involves loss of interest in activities, fatigue, persistent sadness, and difficulty functioning in daily life. Those who have this form of depression have symptoms that last at least two weeks.
- Seasonal Affective Disorder—This form of depression is tied to changes in the seasons. Those who have Seasonal Affective Disorder may find that their depression worsens in the fall and the winter due to reduced sunlight, with symptoms improving in the spring.
- Postpartum Depression—After childbirth, some women experience postpartum depression. This is more than just the “baby blues” and can involve deep anxiety, sadness, and even difficulties bonding with the baby.
- Situational Depression—This is a type of short-term, stress-related type of depression. It typically happens when someone has a hard time coping with a major life change or a stressful event. Common triggers include financial strain, divorce, job loss, the death of a loved one, or serious illness.
